The Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI) recently established its Manufacturing Industry Working Group (MIWG).
This group comprises of identified stakeholders from industry who will advocate on issues affecting our domestic industry and identify potential ways forward on key issues.
The MIWG Subcommittee, which was established following a resolution by the SICCI Board in March earlier this year in accordance with Clause 18.1 (k) of the SICCI Constitution, convened their first meeting on Friday 26 June 2020 in Honiara.
The MIWG aims to provide a platform for informed expert discussions focusing in the harmonization of administration, compliance and enforcement in industry and document positions on measures to be considered by Government and its partners relevant to the manufacturing industry.
“This will ensure that local companies are not disadvantaged and local jobs are protected and will be a resource for Government and development partners to draw on when advancing and implementing policies impacting on the manufacturing industry in Solomon Islands,” SICCI Advocacy Officer, Mr John Ta’amora, said.
As part of the screening process for interested applicants to make up the composition of the MIWG, an Express of Interest (EOI) was sent out through the SICCI membership, as a result, six (6) members were appointed to this inaugural body.
They are Kazi Mushfiqur Rahman (SITCO General Manager), Carson Korowa (SP Oil General Manager), Qila Tuhanuku (Solbrew Marketing and Corporate Affairs), James Lee (General Manager, Meatlovers) and Rogelio Lopez (Production Manager for Global Vision Company Ltd).
Mr Kazi Mushfiqur Rahman was selected as the Group’s Chairman by unanimous vote during the first meeting on June 26.
“The main topics discussed in our initial meeting were standards quality control, level playing field for companies and costs to the manufacturing industry.
“We acknowledge these are not new matters and to progress on them what we are looking forward to is true collaboration with the Solomon Islands Government,” the MIWG Chair and SITCO General Manager, Mr Kazi, said.
At this early stage, meetings for the MIWG will happen on a fortnightly basis with the next one scheduled for Friday 10 July, 2020.
