Jeremy Bartlett
Hatanga Construction and Hardwoods

With 10 years of construction industry experience Jeremy has been involved with SICCI since 2011 as a business member 2015-2016 Chair, 2014 Vice Chair and 2013 Board Member.

Jeremy was encouraged to become involved with SICCI after attending one of SICCI’s business networking events and found it useful in meeting other local business. He recalls that he was asked by a board member if he was interested to be nominated to be on the board and he agreed. That was the start of being on the SICCI board.

Education/career background

Jeremy holds a Bachelor in Science Major in Marine Biology & Aquaculture from James Cook University, Townsville 2006 and has worked at Hatanga Ltd since graduating from university.

Other roles he’s held include Chairman of Frangipani Ice Board from 2014 – 2016 and Director of Liberty Holdings Limited.

In 2015 he was awarded a Cheveng Scholarship to study in the UK and was nominated for the International Leadership Program by the UK Government in 2016.

Jeremy is a strong supporter of the Solomon Islands National Futsal Team, the Kurukurus.

Jan Arie Smit 
General Manager
Solomon Breweries Limited

Jan Arie Smit joined SICCI in 2014 as a business member after taking the role of General Manager for Solomon Breweries. He was elected into the SICCI Board in 2016.

His expertise is around FMGCG, alcohol beverages, logistics and has been in the beverage business for the past 20 years – 17 years with Heineken.

He has worked for Heineken at various roles including IT, Logistics and General Management. His career has brought him to interesting experiences in Europe, Miami, the Caribbean and South Korea before his arrival in Honiara. 

Jan Arie hopes his industry expertise can help SICCI close the gap of untouched business opportunities for local entrepreneur.

Education/career background

He earned his Master’s in Logistic Organisation from the Technical University of Delft in Netherlands.

He’s held previous roles as General Manager of Heineken in Trinidad & Tobago and was a Board Member of the Trinidad & Tobago Beverage Alcoholic Alliance. In South Korea he was also General Manager of Heineken in the country and was appointed Chairman of the Dutch Business Council Korea.

Jan Arie stands by the view that Solomon Islanders are not being given the full potential as entrepreneurs, referring to the many types of businesses that exist abroad but cannot be found in the Solomon Islands. He believes there is a market for Solomon Islanders in these unexplored opportunities and SICCI should play a role in unlocking this potential for locals who want to make the step in running their own business in a sustainable way.

Frank Wickham
General Manager, National Fishery Developments (NFD) Ltd 

Frank has been involved with SICCI since 2013 when his business became a member. In February 2016 he was elected as a board member.

He was encouraged to become involved with SICCI to learn from other business leaders and to contribute to achieving the vision, objectives and strategic outcomes of SICCI. n

Education/career background

Frank holds a Master’s of Science Agriculture, Conservation and Development in the UK and a Bachelor of Agriculture at the University of the South Pacific.

In previous roles, Frank has been Head of School of Natural Resources at the then Solomon Islands College of Higher Education (SICHE), he was Project Manager at an EU Support Programme and he was a Capacity Development Advisor to SPREP   in Samoa. He later went into Government services as the Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.

At present he is also the President of the Solomon Islands Rugby Union Federation.

Frank is also a strong supporter of conservation programmes including Lake Tengano in Rennell Island which is a Heritage site, the Roviana Conservation Trust and the Nut Growers Association of Solomon Islands.

Sebastian Illala

Sebastian has been a business member of SICCI since 2009. He was elected into the SICCI Board in 2016, bringing on-board his strong transport and logistics expertise and his knowledge of the cocoa industry. He was inspired by the existence of SICCI, an organisation he believes can make an enormous difference in formulating economic growth policies with the government.

Sebastian earned his qualification in Business Management System, Accounting & Finance at the University of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand

Sebastian is a strong supporter of the Public Private Partnership (PPP), tax reforms and would like to see improvements in infrastructure and the growth of agriculture and policy improvements.

Need Help with Australian Visas?

Many business people from Solomon Islands need to visit or transit through Australia. This link to the Australian Department of Immigration provides information on how to get an entry or transit visa. Business people can often get 12 month, multiple entry visas. SICCI has been advised by the Department that it is important to apply early and with complete documentation to ensure smooth processing.
